What age do racehorses retire. They mature slowly and tend to peak at 6 to 10 years and can remain competitive into their teens up to 16 years of age when racing regulations dictate they must retire. This is partly due to the natural longevity and stamina of the breed and partly due to the relative slowness of breeding that comes from being such a small population.
